I HAVE BEEN A STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND

I have been a stranger in a strange land,
where my compass failed and every step was
labored and directionless. I prayed; I listened;
you said, Come out of the shadows. Barely
visible above a silhouetted slope, a gold-red
sliver broke the firmament, restored my
equilibrium, and gave me hope. Because I
asked, you spoke. Because you showed me
heaven’s glorious awakening, I promised, I will
follow you. Before the sun went down, I had
forgotten all of it, and even now, beset by
doubts, I wander off, disoriented, lost. Again
you take my hand and lead me from a
treacherous and twisted path onto a high,
straight, sunlit road. Friends wait, you say,
hospitably at this day’s journey’s end. And so it
is that to my left are shade at noontime and a
place to rest, and to my right, a dozen steps
beyond, fresh water gushes from a spring
between two ancient moss-clad stones. In you
I lack for nothing; I have all I need. With you
beside me, I am not alone. I lean upon your
strength; it never stumbles. Night holds neither
mystery nor terror, though the moon is dark,
the stars dim. At the cusp of morning, redbirds
interrupt the silence with their song, and
poplars and acacias whisper, Carry on—
anticipating dawn.

Amen.

Faith in the Grand Scheme of Things

National Geographic

Forgive It First

I've looked every which way at this gift I'm
giving you, in different modes, from many
vantage points, to find its wrinkles and to iron
them away, repair its flaws and make it
exquisite. And just when it looks smooth and
fine and irreproachable, the light shifts just a
little and it seems an ugly, injured thing, and I
begin again to try to become new.

I cultivate a ... garden ... in a light and sunny
corner....  crazy-frankenstein.com

The wind sweeps over the plains and blows
away the chaff and the brittle weeds and
lingering wisps of dry snow, and for a moment
it is peeled clean of all but new life starting
over. I cultivate a small but fruitful garden. I
plant it in a light and sunny corner and do my
best to keep it lovely and immaculate. It is my
pledge of faith in the grand scheme of things. I
dig and fertilize and sow and place the little I
control at the mercy of a force I can invoke
but not manipulate or modify. I must not even
try. Be the planter and the harvester, so says
the earth. Let God be God.

I create nothing, only express the multitude of
combinations of Creation, summoned,
gathered, surrendered into structure. I'll
never seal the gift; its flaws are invitations to
experience, and they are raw material for unearthly transformation.

What it is right now, I give with my whole

heart, not waiting for perfection; I haven't got
the time or tools to fix it right. Accept, forgive it
first, then sweep away the chaff. Plant fresher
seed and love it into life.

Me, Baring My Soul in Bad Prose

CURED

Me,  baring my soul in bad prose on
a public blog, albeit one nobody sees.
The former me — the self-absorbed, the
girl  who  never dared to lean back on
the universe,  the me who cared what
people  thought  of her,  as if the Great
Unwashed had offered an opinion, pro
or con or can't be bothered,  Lady, get a
clue, there ain't nobody watching  you —
she  doesn't  live  here  any more...  and
my,  oh  my,   the  freedom's  sweet,   it  is,
divulging to the world at large, regardless
of its momentary lack of curiosity,  a secret;
a discovery;  an inspiration;  an epiphany;
a bit of intuition; something unexceptional
delivered in a burst of spontaneity; or an
anomaly, like this one: Hey, guys!  Listen
up! I had these ugly blemishes that I was
in denial of until an angel visited my
meditation, kissed  me, and  as quickly
vanished in the shadow of the whisper
of an admonition:  Girlfriend? Try not
to  scratch  those  tender little patches
on your skin. Let them remind you to
be kinder to yourself and not
to whack your pretty
face again
